One Strategic Partnership and Two Presidential Visits: An Interview with George Maior, the Romanian Ambassador to the United States
George-Cristian Maior was born on November 16, 1967, in Cluj-Napoca, Romania. His father, historian Liviu Maior, was Minister of Education (1992–1996) and ambassador to Canada. He graduated from the Babeş-Bolyai University in Cluj-Napoca (LL.B., 1991; Ph.D. in International Law, 1998), George Washington University in Washington, DC (M.A. in International and Comparative Law, 1992) and Defense National College in Bucharest (master’s, 2001).
George Maior worked as a diplomat (the Romanian Foreign Affairs Ministry in Bucharest, 1992–1997), chargé d’affairs (the Romanian Embassy in Ireland at Dublin, 1997–1999), senator (the Romanian Parliament, 2000–2006), Head of the Romanian Intelligence Service (2006–2015) and Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Romania to the United States (2015 — to present).
During the period of October 3 and 4, 2019, George Maior attended the annual ALIANŢA/The Alliance Gala, in Washington, DC, at the Conrad Hotel and the Romanian Embassy, respectively.
With that occasion, on October 3, 2019, Ambassador Maior granted me an exclusive interview.
1. Dear Mr. Ambassador George Maior, you have been Romania’s ambassador to Washington since 2015. Now we are in 2019. How do you consider, at the end of the day, in the last part of your mandate, the Romanian-American relations, with achievements and desires?
I think we have had, at the end of the day, good results because we have had, perhaps, the most important qualitative growth of the strategic partnership with the USA in the last years: two presidential visits, “n” visits at the government level, an increase of the economic exchanges. So there are many achievements.
2. Ambassador, let’s continue. Please describe, in this election year for Romania, the challenges facing the Romanian Embassy in Washington.
We organize the elections normally, we are very well prepared and we take care of our diplomatic mission, which is permanently linked to the strengthening of the strategic partnership.
3. Last question, Ambassador. Can you share some of your thoughts for the future after your term in Washington is over?
I hope it lasts as long as possible. And with this I try to do my daily duty to the country and to this vital relationship for Romania.
4. Thank you, Ambassador.
Thank you.
